The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), on Tuesday, June 4, 2023, at precisely 3:27 PM, the commenced the gradual restoration of the national grid by transmitting 30 megawatts of power to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company network.

This follows the suspension of industrial actions by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), which provided a five-day grace period to test the Federal Government’s sincerity.

Additionally, the Shiroro hydro power plant restarted operations at 8:00 A.M generating 3 megawatts of power, and sustained supply to the grid up until 3:00 PM, contributing to the partial restoration of power supply.

This progress comes as a result of the organized labour unions’ decision to temporarily ‘relax’ their industrial action for one week to facilitate ongoing negotiations with the government.

Meanwhile, in a joint communique issued on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, following the conclusion of the Joint National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, Comrade Joe Ajaero, President NLC, and Comrade Festus Osifo President TUC, expressed relief that the indefinite nationwide strike has been suspended.

The organised labour emphasized that the suspension of the strike was aimed at allowing the Federal Government to commit to concrete and acceptable national minimum wage.

The NEC stated that it would also allow the FG to take definite steps to reverse the electricity tariff hike back to N66/kWh, and abolish the discriminatory classification of electricity consumers into bands.

The workers further move is seen as crucial in addressing the concerns of workers and the general public.

The joint statement by President NLC and TUC underscored the importance of creating an ambience that fosters unhindered negotiations.

The leadership of the Unions therefore expressed hope that the Federal Government will take their demands seriously and work towards finding a lasting solution to the issues at hand.
