Barely 15 hours after the initial collapse which occurred on Monday, Nigeria’s national electricity grid, on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, suffered yet another system failure, bringing the entire country to a standstill.
The latest collapse occurred around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, despite gradual recovery efforts initiated by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) earlier in the morning.
According to data obtained by Advisors Reports, the grid recovery had peaked at 417MW as of 9:20 a.m. before the second collapse struck.
Power supply was distributed across several Distribution Companies (DisCos), with the following allocations:
- Abuja – 44MW
- Benin – 35MW
- Eko – 62MW
- Enugu – 40MW
- Ibadan – 85MW
- Ikeja – 72MW
- Jos – 10MW
- Kaduna – 15MW
- Kano – 20MW
- Port Harcourt – 23MW
- Yola – 11MW
However, at approximately 10 a.m., supply from the grid dropped abruptly to 0MW across all regions, throwing the entire nation into another round of total darkness.
As of the time of filing this report, the TCN has not released an official statement detailing the cause of the grid failure.
The back-to-back collapses have raised concerns about the stability of the national grid and the potential impact on economic activities.
