The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has clarified that the grid disturbance recorded on Thursday, February 19, was a partial, localized incident affecting only parts of the Southeast and not a total system collapse.
The management of NISO made this known in a statement obtained by Advisors Reports debunking a report in the news alleging a system collapse at about 11:54 a.m.
NISO explained that the national grid remained stable throughout the period.
It said, “The protection trip occurred around 11:47 a.m. on some 330kV transmission lines near the Onitsha Transmission Station, leading to a temporary outage in limited areas served by affected transmission corridors, including parts of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company and Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company networks.
NISO further stressed that generation across other regions was not disrupted, system frequency stayed within acceptable limits, and there was no widespread loss of synchronism or nationwide blackout — conditions that would indicate an actual system collapse.
The operator further noted that the affected lines have since been restored and power supply reinstated to the DisCos network.
