Nigeria’s electricity grid has collapsed for the second time in 2026, plunging the country into a widespread blackout.
Checks by Advisors Reports on the official website of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) show that, as of 10:54 AM on Monday, 27 January 2026, all major Distribution Companies (DisCos) recorded 0 MW supply, highlighting the severity of the outage.
EKEDC, in a notice to its customers, confirmed a system collapse at 10:48 AM, which resulted in a loss of power supply across its network.
The company stated that it was working closely with Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) partners for the speedy restoration of the grid and promised to keep customers updated as soon as power supply is restored.
All major Distribution Companies across Nigeria—including Abuja, Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ibadan, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Yola—recorded zero megawatts (0 MW) of power supply, leaving total national generation at 0 MW.
This follows the first grid collapse of the year on Friday, 23 January 2026, which also caused nationwide outages. NISO has yet to issue an official statement on the latest collapse but had previously attributed the January 23 disturbance to the simultaneous tripping of multiple 330kV transmission lines, after which system restoration was carried out.
The repeated collapse underscores ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s power sector, including infrastructure strain and generation shortfalls, leaving millions of homes and businesses without electricity.
