A 4-storey building in Docemo Street, located off Moshalashi Street on Lagos Island, was engulfed in flames due to a power surge following the restoration of electricity.

Advisors Reports’ findings showed that the fire engulfed No. 47, Docemo Street, which housed both shops and residential units, suffering severe damage as the fire rapidly spread throughout the structure.

It later extended to four buildings at No. 45, No. 47, No. 49A, and No. 49B at Docemo Street, Lagos Island.

Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, stated that the Service was alerted to a fire emergency at the intersection of Nnamdi Azikwe and Docemo in Idumota, Lagos.

She said, “At 07:41 hours, the call was received, and emergency services swiftly mobilized. Upon arrival at 07:58 hours, Casualties have not been confirmed at this time.

In an additional update released around 12 noon, Adeseye stated that the ongoing fire emergency shows a significant reduction in the intensity of the blaze. The affected properties are identified as house numbers 47, 49, and 51.

She emphasized that tragically, house number 49 has collapsed due to the intensity of the fire and the close proximity of buildings.

The Director of Lagos State Fire Service further noted that the fire has spread to house number 53, assuring that emergency response teams will continue to work tirelessly to contain the spread of the fire and protect the surrounding.

Earlier, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary, of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), in a statement obtained by Advisors Reports, on Wednesday confirmed the incident.

According to him, “The fire which started at No. 47 Dosunmu St. escalated to four adjoining buildings.

He said, “The index building at No. 47 Dosunmu St. collapsed as a result of the impact of the fire. Responders combated the fire to prevent further escalation.”

Oke-Osanyintolu further emphasized that LASEMA’s response team, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other emergency agencies were on the ground, including firemen from the Nigerian Ports Authority, officials from the Lagos State Ambulance Service, personnel from other relevant agencies, and members of the Nigeria Police Force.

“All responders are present at the scene of the incident under the supervision of the Commissioner for Special Duties and Internally Generated Revenue, Gbenga Oyerinde,” he added.
