The National Economic Council (NEC) has set up a National Electrification Committee, chaired by Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu, to end national grid collapses and enhance power supply through the implementation of Nigeria’s National Electrification Strategy.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who also serves as NEC Chairman, announced the decision during the Council’s 146th meeting held on Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to Shettima, the committee will focus on addressing critical challenges in the power sector while fostering deeper engagement with states under the Electricity Reform Act 2023 and the National Electrification Strategy and Implementation Plan.
Highlighting the importance of electricity as a driver of economic growth, Shettima emphasized that access to energy is a fundamental right, not a privilege.
“The formation of this committee is one of the key outcomes of today’s meeting,” he stated, adding that increasing access to electricity through private-sector-driven renewable energy initiatives is essential for sustainable development.
