Out of 13,168,677 total registered electricity customers in Nigeria as of May 2024, only 5,977,203 (45.39%) were metered leaving 7,191,474 (54.61%) customers still unmetered.
Advisors Reports obtained this through a factsheet released by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for May 2024, assessing the metering and customer service performance of the country’s electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos).
A breakdown of the metering performance of the DisCos by Advisors Reports showed that Ikeja Electric with a total of 1,211,880 registered customers recorded an outstanding metering performance in the period under review, achieving a 76.25% metering rate.
Out of its 924,040 metered customers, a total of 287,840 remained unmetered. It therefore installed 2,576 new meters in May alone.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (Abuja DisCo) registered a total of 1,242,160 customers, achieving a 70.02% metering rate. As of the period under review, the DisCo has a total of 861,780 customers metered, as 380,380 remained unmetered. The company managed to install only 22 meters in May.
Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko DisCo) reported having 770,580 registered customers with a 56.76% metering rate. Out of these, 437,400 are metered, leaving 333,180 unmetered. In May alone, the DisCo installed 171 new meters.
Other DisCos’ metering performance as of May 2024
Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) with 1,363,550 registered customers, achieved a 49.31% metering rate. The DisCo has 672,420 metered customers and 691,130 unmetered, installing 237 new meters alone in May.
Enugu Electricity Distribution Company has a total of 1,396,440 registered customers, 632,720 of whom were metered, and 763,720 unmetered, resulting in a 45.32% metering rate. The company installed only 788 new meters in May.
Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) registered 2,488,171 total electricity customers in the period under review, with a 42.94% metering rate. It has 1,068,470 metered customers and 1,419,701 unmetered customers. It therefore managed to install 566 new meters in May.
Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company with 1,179,190 registered customers, has a metering rate of 42.55%. It metered 501,770 customers and left 677,420 unmetered. The company installed 288 new meters in May.
Aba Power reported a 35.82% metering rate among its 198,040 customers. It has 70,930 metered customers and 127,110 unmetered, installing 1,398 meters in May.
Jos Electricity Distribution Company: Jos DisCo has 745,480 customers with a 33.52% metering rate, 249,900 of whom are metered. The company installed 1,189 meters in May.
Kano Electricity Distribution Company: Kano DisCo reported a 24.05% metering rate among its 881,380 customers, with 210,960 metered and 670,420 unmetered. The DisCo installed 144 new meters in May.
Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company: Kaduna DisCo, with 874,200 customers, has a 24.01% metering rate, metering 211,960 customers and leaving 662,240 unmetered. The company installed 390 meters in May.
Yola Electricity Distribution Company: Yola DisCo reported a 15.64% metering rate among its 817,610 customers, with 127,910 metered and 689,700 unmetered. It installed 964 meters in May.
