The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority has commissioned an integrated Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion and refueling station at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, as part of its rollout of 20 CNG refueling projects across federal universities under the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund.

The project, tagged CNG-Sprout, was commissioned on Thursday and forms part of nationwide partnerships between MDGIF, FEMADEC Energy, and the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative aimed at developing integrated CNG ecosystems across federal universities.

The initiative also includes special palliative support for university transportation, featuring the donation of CNG-powered buses and tricycles to ease mobility challenges within the campus.

Advisors Reports gathered that this is the second integrated CNG facility for federal universities in Nigeria, following the 2025 launch at Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, through a partnership between MDGIF, Femadec Energy Limited, and the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi).

According to NMDPRA, the initiative marked a key milestone in its mandate to attract investments across Nigeria’s gas value chain and boost domestic gas utilization.

Mr. Oluwole Adama, Executive Director, speaking at the ceremony, described the project as a practical demonstration of Nigeria’s gas-based energy transition.

He noted that the OAU facility is one of 20 CNG refueling projects being deployed across federal universities to promote cleaner mobility, expand access to gas infrastructure and deliver measurable socio-economic benefits.

Prof. Adebayo Simeon Bamire, Vice Chancellor of OAU, in his comment commended the initiative, stating that the project, designed to serve both the University and the surrounding community, will foster research opportunities, practical learning and innovation in alternative fuels.

He added that it will also strengthen relations between the University and the host community, promote sustainable transportation and create shared economic value.

Engr Akinnola Fola, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, FEMADEC Energy, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to delivering safe, efficient and scalable CNG infrastructure nationwide through strong public and private sector collaboration.

The project, according to NMDPRA, is designed to reduce transportation costs and pollution on campus.

The integrated facility is expected to provide CNG buses and vehicle conversion services to students, staff and neighboring communities to foster cleaner mobility, practical research and community engagement.

Femadec Energy Limited, the technical partner on the project, is a Nigerian clean energy company active in gas infrastructure development, vehicle conversion services and gas-powered transport solutions.
