In response to the public outcry stemming from errors in the reclassification of some Band A customers to a lower band, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has mandated all electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to promptly refund customers who were erroneously billed at the new rate through energy tokens no later than Thursday, April 11, 2024.

NERC made this known in a press statement released on Saturday obtained by Advisors Reports on the sideline of complains by customers who were wrongly billed at the new rate.

According to NERC, all DisCos shall ensure that ONLY the newly approved Band A feeders listed in their April 2024 supplementary orders are maintained as band A for the purpose of vending to prepaid customers and billing for postpaid customers on their networks.

NERC also said, “All DisCos are required to immediately post on their websites the schedule of approved Band A feeders that have been affected by the rate review.

“All DisCos shall set up a portal by 10th April 2024 on their website that allows all customers to check their current Bands by entering their meter or account numbers,” the Commission said.

NERC while emphasizing its commitment to monitor compliance with the directive, has therefore directed the DisCos to refund customers through energy tokens and provide evidence of compliance to the NERC by April 12, 2024.
