Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited (MESL), the operator of the Kainji, Jebba, and Zungeru hydropower plants, has been honoured with the Afrisafe Merit Award for outstanding commitment to safety standards in the energy sector.

Olugbenga Adebola, Head of Corporate Communications for MESL, in a statement obtained by Advisors Reports on Tuesday, confirmed that the award was presented at the 2024 Africa Safety Congress in Livingston, Zambia, held on November 7-8, 2024.

Dr. Prisca Ngozi Iwunze, Head of Quality, Health, and Safety at Mainstream, received the award on behalf of Engr. Lamu Audu, Managing Director/CEO at Mainstream, who was also celebrated as the 2024 Afrisafe CEO of the Year in the categories of Energy Services and Environment.

Dr. Iwunze expressed the company’s pride, stating, “We’re thrilled to receive this award, underscoring our unrelenting commitment to safety,” and emphasized the industry-leading results of MESL’s dedicated efforts.

Engr. Lamu Audu credited the achievement to a strong safety culture across all levels of the organization, saying, “These recognitions wouldn’t have been possible without our Board of Directors, Executive management, staff, and stakeholders.”

He highlighted MESL’s safety initiatives, such as the Monthly ‘Walk the Talk,’ Quarterly Health Talks, ‘Spot the Hazard’ program, 5S Methodology, and the Annual Safety Week, all supported by the company’s adherence to international standards including ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 45001:2018.

Afrisafe officials lauded MESL’s achievements, stating that its certifications demonstrate exemplary dedication to quality, environmental management, and occupational health and safety.

Dr. Iwunze also noted that MESL’s achievement of over 7.5 million man-hours without Lost Time Injury (LTI) sets a high bar in the industry, pushing other Nigerian operators to enhance safety, reduce accidents, and support the national grid with greater reliability.

Advisors Reports further confirmed that MESL shared the award alongside other notable organizations, including Kenyan Airways and Total Energies Marketing, Zambia.
