Kaduna Electric has raised concerns over the rising spate of energy theft, particularly among customers on Band A feeders who enjoy a minimum of 20 hours daily supply.
Abdulazeez Abdullahi, Kaduna Electric’s Head of Corporate Communication, made this known in a statement obtained by Advisors Reports on Wednesday.
According to Abdullahi, the high rate of energy theft, primarily perpetrated by customers on Band A, has escalated energy losses, significantly draining revenue for the DisCo.
He noted the scourge of energy theft within its network has made it difficult for Kaduna Electric to meet its obligations to the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
Abdullahi specifically identified the Band A feeders responsible for the energy theft as including Legislative, Barnawa GRA, and Leventis in Kaduna, and Canteen in Zaria.
He emphasized that these areas have become notorious for energy theft and low payment of electricity bills.
Despite a series of physical engagements and appeals with customers in these areas, Abdullahi confirmed that these efforts had not yielded the desired results.
Consequently, Kaduna Electric has prepared a team now collaborating with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) and other security agencies to tackle the menace of energy theft.
Abdullahi further emphasized that the DisCo’s whistleblowing policy includes naming and shaming customers in the media.
He encouraged customers to desist from this destructive act and to promptly pay for the energy they consume.
Kaduna Electric noted that the prompt settlement of electricity bills is the only guarantee for improved services to all customers across all customer bands.
