The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has announced the installation of over 10,000 meters in the Ijora District, with more than 1,000 free prepaid meters distributed under Tranche A of the Meter Asset Financing (MAF) scheme, which targeted Band A customers before concluding in June 2024.
Mrs. Rekhiat Momoh, EKEDC’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, who was represented by Mr. Samuel Edoho, Chief Commercial Officer, made this disclosure during a recent customer engagement forum.
Momoh reaffirmed the company’s dedication to investing in infrastructure, stressing that “EKEDC remains committed to sustaining and improving electricity delivery across its network.”
Advisors Reports gathered that in June 2024, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), under Order No: NERC/2024/072, approved N21 billion for 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to implement the Presidential Metering Initiative.
The funding was allocated for the operationalization of “Tranche A” under the Meter Acquisition Fund framework, aimed at accelerating meter deployment and closing the metering gap nationwide.
Edoho noted that despite seasonal operational difficulties, particularly during the ongoing rainy season, EKEDC remains committed to enhancing service reliability.
“We have upgraded key electrical infrastructure to minimize service interruptions,” she said.
Customer feedback at the event corroborated the improved electricity supply, reinforcing the DisCo’s assertion of progress in the area.
Mrs. Momoh commended the community’s active participation at the forum and encouraged residents to interact strictly with authorized EKEDC staff.
She urged them to direct all service-related complaints to the company through official customer service channels to ensure prompt resolution.
Mr. Edoho raised red flags over the rising trend of unpaid bills, appealing for greater customer cooperation.
“We have dual responsibilities, we deliver power, and our customers are expected to promptly pay for the services received,” he emphasized.
Mr. Edoho warned against illegal trading beneath power lines, energy theft through meter bypass, and vandalism of electricity infrastructure.
“Illegal connections will be disconnected, and responsible parties will be handed over to the appropriate authorities to ensure public safety and safeguard our assets,” he cautioned.
Engr. Henry Ukoh, EKEDC’s Head of Distribution Operations, called on community leaders to support efforts in curbing dangerous activities around electrical installations.
He underscored the severe risks involved, particularly in high-density zones like Ijora.
