NERC approves Adegbenro as EKEDC acting CEO, replacing Wola after just over 2 months

… six CEOs in 13 years as EKEDC leadership carousel continues

Oredola Adeola

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has formally approved the appointment of Ms. Sherifat Adegbenro as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC).

In a statement issued on Monday and obtained by Advisors Reports, the Commission said the confirmation aligns with the Code of Corporate Governance for the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.

It added that the appointment is intended to ensure leadership continuity pending the emergence of a substantive CEO for the Disco.

Adegbenro succeeds Mr. Wola Joseph-Condotti, who was announced as acting MD/CEO of EKEDC in January 2026 but has now exited the role after a brief tenure of less than three months.

Checks by Advisors Reports indicate that EKEDC has witnessed a series of leadership transitions since its privatisation in 2013.

The company’s pioneer Managing Director, Oladele Amoda, led the utility from 2013 to 2019, before handing over to Adeoye Fadeyibi, who served until 2022.

Fadeyibi was subsequently succeeded by Tinuade Sanda in March 2022.

Sanda’s tenure, however, ended abruptly in March 2024 following a controversial removal and reinstatement crisis that drew regulatory scrutiny.

In the aftermath of the governance dispute, Rekhiat Momoh was appointed Acting CEO during the period of boardroom and regulatory intervention.

The leadership changes coincided with a shift in ownership structure, as Transgrid Enerco acquired a controlling stake in EKEDC and assumed board control from West Power & Gas Limited (WPG).

This transition paved the way for the brief leadership of Joseph-Condotti prior to the latest regulatory-backed appointment.

With Adegbenro now at the helm in an acting capacity, attention is expected to shift to the company’s next steps in stabilising its leadership and operations amid ongoing sector reforms.

“Before her elevation, Adegbenro served as the company’s Deputy CEO, having been promoted from Chief Audit and Compliance Officer.

She brings over two decades of professional experience spanning audit, enterprise risk management, and business process optimisation.

Her track record includes leading audit engagements, driving process reengineering initiatives, and overseeing the rollout of entity-level and operational policies designed to align with corporate objectives.

Adegbenro is also recognised for her expertise in Enterprise Risk and Fraud Management, having implemented frameworks across multiple sectors aimed at improving governance standards and operational efficiency.

She joined EKEDC in 2015 and has since been responsible for Strategic, Risk-Based Internal Audits and Investigations, a role that positioned her at the centre of the company’s accountability and performance monitoring systems.
