Nigeria’s already fragile electricity supply, the national power grid again collapsed on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at around 3 pm, marking the 8th grid collapse in 2024 alone.
This development has again thrown the entire country into total darkness as the supply to all the Distribution Companies dropped to 0MW.
The collapse has resulted in a complete loss of power supply across the network, affecting millions of Nigerians.
Data obtained from the Independent System Operator, an arm of the TCN,by Advisors Reports, showed that as of 7 pm when this news was published, the total load allocation to the 11 electricity distribution companies (Discos) stood at 0 MW.
This includes Abuja, Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ibadan, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Yola Discos.
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) confirmed the incident in a statement released by Emeka Ezeh, the Head of Corporate Communications.
Ezeh revealed that all EEDC’s interface stations with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) are currently out of supply, making it impossible to provide services to customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States.
According to the statement, the EEDC is awaiting detailed information about the collapse and the restoration of supply from the National Control Centre (NCC) in Osogbo.
Advisors Reports gathered that the national power grid has been plagued by frequent collapses in recent years, with the TCN reporting 105 cases of grid collapse from 2015 to date.
The persistent grid failures have been attributed to various factors, including gas supply constraints, transmission infrastructure vandalism, and liquidity crises in the power sector.
Despite efforts by the TCN to improve grid stability, the situation remains dire, with the company acknowledging that there is still room for improvement
