… facilitates availability of energy for residents, investors

Oredola Adeola

The Ogun State Government has revealed plans to acquire the abandoned Hydropower Plant under the management of the Ogun-Osun River Basin to enhance energy availability for residents and investors in the state.

Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed this during a meeting with Engr. Adedeji Ashiru, new Managing Director and CEO of the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority, and his management team on Tuesday.

Governor Abiodun highlighted the importance of revitalizing the long-abandoned Hydropower Plant to provide sufficient energy for business activities in Ogun State.

He emphasized that this acquisition would help transform the state into an industrial hub by ensuring affordable energy costs for businesses.

“Our administration acknowledges the importance of effective river basin management in controlling flooding, particularly in areas like Isheri and Kara,” Governor Abiodun stated.

He revealed plans to engage consultants to address recurring flooding issues and improve water resource management.

The Governor also noted the critical role of the river basin in water supply and agriculture for the Southwest states.

He stressed the need for collaborative efforts to leverage the Basin Authority’s resources for agricultural development and food security initiatives in the region.

Advisors Reports gathered that the proposed acquisition aims to repurpose the Ogun-Osun River Basin’s resources for productive use, thereby mitigating the adverse impacts on these communities.

Checks showed that apart from fishing activities, the basin has been underutilized for years, causing significant disruption to neighbouring communities in both Ogun and Lagos State.
