After a decade and a half of enduring power outages, residents in thousands of communities across five Local Government Areas (LGAs) within the Ondo South Senatorial District can finally breathe a sigh of relief, as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has officially inaugurated a 132KV transmission line and a 132KV/33KV substation situated in Okitipupa Local Government Area (LGA).

The official commission of the 132KV transmission line and 132KV/33KV substation was held on Wednesday in Okitipupa LGA, Ondo State.

President Bola Tinubu, who was represented at the event, by Hon. Abubakar Momoh, Minister of Niger Delta Development, assured that the transmission line and substation in Okitipupa would significantly contribute to the progress and prosperity of the Niger Delta region.

Hon. Momoh stated that the project exemplifies the unwavering commitment of the federal government and the renewed hope agenda, ensuring sustainable development, peace, and security in the Niger Delta region.

He said, “The monumental project, facilitated by NDDC, will play a pivotal role in stimulating the economy of this region.

“Unlocking power and energy is a key priority among the presidential initiatives of President Tinubu.

“Access to reliable power supply is essential for social and economic development, creating job opportunities and supporting the growth of small and medium enterprises.

“The transmission line and substation project are part of a series of initiatives undertaken by the NDDC, including the ‘Light Up the Niger Delta’ solar streetlights and other vital infrastructure projects.

The Minister emphasised that the project could provide an uninterrupted and efficient power supply, contributing significantly to the progress and prosperity of the Niger Delta region.

Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Ondo State Governor, in his speech, stated that his administration knows the crucial role that electricity plays in enhancing the development of various sectors- education, healthcare, agriculture, industrialization, and a host of others.

According to him, without prejudice, the inauguration of the Power Substation is a testament to our commitment to sustainable electricity supply and ensuring a permanent end to 15 years of darkness in the Ondo South Senatorial District of the State.

He said, “The Ode-Erinje Power Substation which draws its electricity source from Omotosho Power Plant is designed to illuminate over 2,000 communities spanning five Local Government Areas in Ondo South Senatorial districts.

“Undoubtedly, this transformative project will bring about significant benefits including job opportunities, new investments, better healthcare, and support socio-economic development in the district even as the project will, in no small measure, boost economic activities and improve the quality of life for our citizens by ensuring reliable and affordable electricity supply.

“Considering what we have been through for about 15 years without electricity supply, it is imperative I urge our people to make the protection of the Substation and other allied facilities from vandalism, our collective duty,” Governor Aiyedatiwa said.

The Governor therefore commended the current management NDDC for its invaluable partnership, unwavering support, and steadfast commitment to realizing this high-impact endeavour.

Mr. Chiedu Ebie, Chairman of the NDDC Governing Board, in his address, reaffirmed the Board’s steadfast commitment to advancing the implementation of the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda in Ondo State.
According to him, the long-awaited electricity initiative spanning over a decade, underscored the Board’s dedication to providing essential electricity to five local government areas in Ondo State.
He also emphasized the Board’s pledge to continue prioritizing projects that bring tangible improvements to the lives of people in the Niger Delta Region.
Mr. Asuquo Ekpeyong, Chairman of the NDDC Senate Committee, also in his remark stated that the power project in Okitipupa LGA symbolizes a significant step in our collective effort to enhance the quality of life and economic potential of our region.
He said, “We have witnessed ongoing progress towards achieving a vision that brings peace to our communities, fosters growth and development, and brings prosperity to the region.
The project, according to him, is not just an infrastructure endeavor but also a beacon of hope for what can be achieved when we unite with purpose and determination.
He said, “A closer look at this specific project reveals several positive milestones in bridging the infrastructure gaps in the Niger Delta and Nigeria as a whole.”
Mr. Deolu Ijose, Managing Director/CEO of Benin Distribution Company, in his remark stated that for the past 14 years, Okitipupa community has been shrouded in darkness, but through collaborative efforts, the people of the community have finally seen the project come to fruition.
According to him, the project will bring immense benefits to the communities and businesses of residents.
He said, “The substation project, sponsored by the NDDC and successfully completed by the current Administration, will serve five local government areas in Ondo State.
“Maintenance will not be a concern, as this transmission station will supply power to neighboring communities,” Ijose said.
The MD/CEO of Benin DisCo therefore urged the community leaders to safeguard this facility as a valuable asset, considering the significant investment made by the NDDC to ensure its success.
